Summer holidays in Egypt

Posted in Egypt Travel on June 27th, 2011

Article by Thom Sanders

Want to know where to have the best family holidays ever? Asked my daughter one morning before school. I eyed her suspiciously. Note to self, I thought, got to stop these kids watching so much TV – otherwise they’ll end up advertising the whitest dish washer tablets and the best insurance deals to me. ‘Egypt, mum – we’ve been learning all about the pharaohs in class’. I breathed a sigh of relief. Now that at least sounded slightly educational. What child didn’t love learning about all the blood and gore and the mighty pyramids in the power hungry world of Ancient Egypt?

That is how the next summer holidays we ended up travelling to the Middle East on a direct flight to Cairo. We landed in the bright and dusty city after an easy short journey a little tired but also raring to go – I was also a big fan of the Egyptians as a child. Our hotel was out of the main city but just the thing for family holidays. Quieter and cleaner than a lot of properties I’ve heard exist in the narrow streets of the souks, this hotel also had the added bonus of a sparkling blue swimming pool. Perfect for splashing about it after a hot day of sightseeing.

In fact, the heat is worth a quick aside. If you travel in the school summer holidays, it will be hot. Not your ordinary ‘ooh it’s bit hot, hot’ but a real searing heat that hits you as you emerge from your – thankfully – air conditioned hotel, even when it’s still quite early morning.

But onwards on our adventure. Our first stop was the pyramids, just outside the city bounds, which can’t help but be an awesome sight to see. We then saw the Sphinx. But it was the Karnak tombs that left all my family open mouthed. The pillars and statues and the site in which they stand proud are all huge. The hieroglyphics remind you that once upon a time, this beautiful, alien script was how people used to communicate. It’s all very impressive, particularly if you have a young family in tow. They had never seen anything quite like it.

Our next adventure was a cruise along the Nile River, and for me this was a real highlight. We decided to travel by felucca for a traditional sailing experience and drifting along the waters, watching farmer tend their crops on the banks and leaving behind frenetic city life, was bliss.
